Magnavox used the same style cabinets with different configuration of electronics inside. To start there's at least two labels stuck somewhere on your set unless removed. The Magnavox AMP-185 is very easy to work on; at this point replacing the caps in it should not be very difficult or expensive.
Back to the original problem with the changer: I can think of only two possibilities. The types of consoles that seem to demand higher prices these days are those like the one featured in the post below- the Magnavox Astrosonic and not because of its quality- which is less than yours- but its styling which carries a desired mid-century "Modern" look.
