For many students, UIUC has a very good reputation in Illinois and may indeed be their dream school, much as it may be for kids in Computer Science, Physics, Accounting, Civil Engineering and some other top-10 majors. My son got admitted to Purdue, UIUC, and UC Irvine for Mechanical Engineering. Many people around me recommended UIUC over the other two, but their arguments are not super-convincing to me.
These are the key factors currently in my equation. Cost: I’m a California resident so UCI is the cheapest (40k), and UIUC the most expensive at 63k. Ranking, Different rankings tell conflicting stories ... UIUC waitlisted me despite solid academics (SAT score of 1560, IB Score of 40) and a solid extra-curricular and leadership portfolio.

Uiuc Cs128, UIUC’s decision as to how to allocate the merit funds from the state is disappointing…first off, to tie it to income limits, and second, the allocation of funds to a very small group of students. Instead of say doling out a modest amount to a large number of students, they gave $20,000 scholarships to that small group. Hello, I found a email from UIUC that says I will receive my admission decision this Friday at 4:00 p.m. I know people suppose to receive the admission result by the end of March, and this letter scared me. I am not sure if I am ready to receive my reject letter this early. I also found there isn’t a UIUC Regular Decision Discussion yet, so I think as they are starting to release RD results ...
I agree this late EA notification puts UIUC at a competitive disadvantage. This should be an interesting cycle with two important factors likely to result in a lower acceptance rate…first year on common app, and a 600-800 smaller first year class due to overenrolled class of 2025.
